Days of riding through the desert dunes, wakes of sand thrashed back by the churning tires. The merciless sun beating down as the riders race to the end… perhaps not to win, but just to finish. Most of us will never race the Dakar, but this February 24-26, you will have the opportunity to join a limited number of adventure riders to meet, train and ride with one of only two Americans to ever finish on the podium of the Dakar: Jimmy Lewis.

The entry fee of $225 includes 5 catered meals (dinner Fri, all meals Sat, breakfast Sun) including adult beverages, two days of epic routes (Sat and Sun), camping fees, a techniques clinic led by Jimmy Lewis, entertainment, and an unforgettable weekend. All skill levels welcome -- we will break into riding groups based on ability level.

We’ll be planning epic routes through desert rock and sand with the help of our local dealer, BMW of Las Vegas, and will have professional photographers there to capture images and video of the weekend. Delicious and hearty southwestern food will be catered for the event, and at night we’ll enjoy cold beverages around a campfire before turning in to our tents. We will be camping outside Death Valley and will be near truly great riding of all types. There will be a drawing for five free wheel trueings over the Taste of Dakar weekend provided by Woody's Wheel Works. One lucky attendee will win a brand new wheel set!

Come in Friday to meet with everyone and enjoy a meal and beverages around the campfire. Bright and early Saturday morning, we’ll have a brief training session with Jimmy Lewis before heading out on a route specially mapped for our group. We’ll break for lunch in Pahrump at Jimmy’s training facility, before continuing on for the afternoon. The day will end with us back at the campgrounds, where riders are welcome to relax in the nearby natural hot springs and hot tubs before a delicious dinner. The next day we’ll enjoy breakfast together before packing up and heading out on routes for individual rides.

This special weekend ride is a great training opportunity for both beginners and the more experienced. Jimmy Lewis has been training off road riders for years, and can offer great insight for everyone. This will be a weekend full of entertainment, great food, and epic riding.

Jimmy Lewis Off Road Academy will be offering 2 additional classes at a discount to the Taste of Dakar attendees. Friday's class is a refresher course for beginner and medium skill levels. Sunday's class will be 2 days for medium to advance level riders. Click here for more information and to registar. What kind of bike should I bring?

Please bring your plated bike – this is an adventure ride, which means some of it will be on public roads.

What do I need to bring with me?

Be sure to pack your camping, sleeping and riding gear – including a Camelback and snacks (like granola bars), because you’ll get hungry and thirsty as you ride. Extra gas is a good idea too. We’ll provide your meals and the route. If you’d like to bring items such as a camera or SPOT 2, please feel free to do so.

Parts of the route with be rough and you want to make sure your motorcycle is adequately protected. AltRider hard parts will be for sale at the event, but we suggest you put in your order ahead of time – there may be time on Friday evening to assist with installs of our parts.

Can I show up day of the event, pay and get in?

This is a capped ride – when it fills up, it’s closed. You will not be able to show up and be included on the ride – only those who have registered ahead of time and are on the list will be eligible to ride.

What does the $225 get me?

Access to epic riding terrain through Death Valley all guided by Jimmy Lewis. Riding clinics and training by Jimmy Lewis. 3 square meals a day and entertainment provided by AltRider.

How do I sign up for this ride?

After you process and pay for your registration on our website and receive your confirmation email, you are on our list. If you choose to pay for registration for yourself and a friend, please put his or her name in Customer Notes as you process payment.

How do I get there?

Two weeks before the event, we will send out an email detailing a suggested route to the event, our meetup location, and contact information for the AltRider team.

However the nearest major city and airport is Las Vegas. If you are flying in you should book your flight into McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. Local BMW rentals are available from BMW Motorcycles of Las Vegas but they are limited.

Are pets allowed? Families?

Pets are not allowed. If your family members are registered and ready to ride, they’re more than welcome to join us.

Can I trailer my bike down to the campsite?

If you’d like to bring your bike in a trailer, there will be space to park your vehicle.

What is the camping situation like?

We will be camping at the Shoshone RV park and Campground. We will be tent camping however the grounds provide electricity, hot showers, full bathrooms and laundry facilities. You'll also have access to a warm springs pool and fire pit.

What should I expect to do during the weekend?

Friday night we’ll all be getting to know one another and relaxing from the ride down. Saturday morning, however, we’ll enjoy a good breakfast before beginning our riding clinic. After going over some basic techniques that will be helpful in the rain desert terrain, we’ll head out on our first half of the day ride. The destination will be Jimmy Lewis’s property for lunch and review of the first half of the ride. We’ll then suit back up and tackle some training loops all led by Jimmy Lewis. Everyone will meet back at camp for a hot dinner, beverages around the campfire, and a few surprises.

Sunday morning breakfast will be served and then we will pack up and head home.
