Kicked-up debris can endanger your BMW engine, but the AltRider skid plate for the R 1200 GS has it covered.
Made of sturdy 4.75 mm anodized aluminum, the AltRider skid plate features a corrugated design that multiplies its strength. The 1 3/8 inch radii flanges mirror the profile of the headers, which creates a unique shape that tightly conforms to the underside of the bike.
Close turns, brush, and other off road dangers won’t pose a threat to your vulnerable header pipes, because this product gives them substantial coverage. And when the front wheel spits back rocks and dirt, the AltRider skid plate will protect your headers and cross pipe.
Easy installation
Fits all R1200GS models
Fits with Akrapovic full exhaust system shotgun style
Note: Not currently compatible with Remus or Two Brothers header.

Bomb Proof Skid Plate
My first exposure to the ALTRider skid plate came in June, at the BMW MOA rally in Redmond. I was invited on a ride with Dave Wachs from GiantLoop. Dave had met a couple guys from FL, and wanted to show them around. One of them had just purchased the ALTRider skid plate the day before for his R12GS.
It didn't take long for Dave to get us up into some really sweet 2 track, up near Sisters. I believe it was Three Creek Trail, where things started to get interesting. He had advised us there would be a water crossing. Well long story short, 2 of us ingested water on the way across, stalling the bike(s). We got them going again, only to find snow blocking the path right around the corner! (I'm pretty sure he planned this.)
On the way back through the water crossing, the guy with the new skid plate got bumped off course as he was exiting the water, and his front tire ran up and over a large rock on the edge of the trail. He was carrying plenty of speed, and he went right over the rock, landing hard, with his full weight squarely on the skid plate. Sounded like a big bell went off.
Later inspection showed a small dimple in the surface. No dent what so ever, and of course no damage. I really liked how the fasteners are protected in the recessed channels. They provide lots of strength too. Did I mention how thick this thing is? 4.75 mm wow.
I had a trip to Colorado planned the next month, and seeing as how my OE skid place is sorely undersized and bent up, I purchased one of these black beauties. I also didn't like how the OE skid plate mounted to the sump, so I upgraded to the later version at the same time.
I know this has been long winded, but now nearly four months later, I am very happy with it. I did several mountain passes in CO, including Mosquito Pass (solo), which is very rough and rocky. There are some new scratches on the skid plate but no dents, and no damage to the bike or headers.
See you on the trail!

Protect it BETTER
Jeremy was nice enough to install this huge, all encompassing bash plate during the Mines & Meadows Rally last month. After riding with the larger, better built plate, it was clear I'd made a good investment in the critical (and expensive) pieces it protects. I could hear stones and debris ringing against the plate. Each time I thought to myself what it would have done to the thinner bash plate or even worse, the exhaust headers.
Great investment and great support!

Solid
Great protection for the BMW R1200GSA. Much better than the stock skid plate. It offers a lot more protection from rocks and debris coming off the gravel roads which is where this bike is meant to be ridden. It also helps to protect the exhaust headers. Must have added protection for your bike.
