A great route, your favorite riding buddy, a shallow puddle, your trustworthy bike... whatever the situation even when you think you know what's what, plans change! That's why we love adventure, right?

Ride up the rocky hill. Hard left with opposite lean. Carefully riding along a shallow puddle here and OHHHH HELL where did my all SPEED go? No don't drop it that way! DAMN! Why is that puddle so DEEP?

Out side of Mae Sariang, Thailand the recent flooding took its toll on the road....we just went around, of course.

An unplanned, unscheduled stop

The last day of a week in Moab, Utah. After a day of riding trails, we headed down the mountain. Planned on breaking camp and hitting the back roads towards South Dakota via Colorado. Change of plans, I guess we'll stay in Moab another night! Altrider crash bars saved most of the 2-week-old bike, my gear saved my body, and GREAT friends saved the trip,(and the photo evidence).

Nothing better than a motorcycle to deliver one to the raw cultural features of a country. While taking in breathtaking scenery accessing an off-the-beaten-path, rocky dirt road, I met this Nomadic Mother and Children - Middle of nowhere Morocco, Africa approx. 350km SE of Marrakech

I was told about this road from a guy who had been on it and said it was a fun ride off the pavement. "You can"t miss it. A gravel road goes straight up the hill when the pavement makes a sharp left. It's about 10 miles from town." As I'm heading towards highway 395 I see the gravel road. Up I go and stop at the top. Really??? It's a little different than he discribed but... this MUST be it. About 100 yards down the road I'm starting to think "I might be on the wrong road" I get to the bottom with a lot of skiding and "Oh $#its" and find a dead end with about a 75 foot drop off. YIKES! Almost two hours of trying to make it back up in the talc like dirt and baseball sized rocks mixed in with it, I run out of water and strength. (I put it down seven times) In the almost 100 degree temp I decide to leave the bike and the rest of my gear and hike to the pavement. I hitch hike into town "28 miles" (well there's the problem) away and hire a guy in a 4X4 to help me pull my bike up the hill. Low range and a hundred plus feet of rope get the bike out. Now for my gear. Down the road we drive and turn around at the dead end. I load up my gear and up we go, then back down to get a run at the hill. Up we go, slipping and sliding and finally we get to the top where my bike is. The guy looks at me and say's "you must be one hell of a rider or that's one hell of a bike because I can't believe you made it 200 feet from the top of the hill on that big ol'thing. It's a hell of a bike I told him, If I was a hell of a rider I'd be drinking a beer by now. Well follow me back to my place and I'll buy you one. That was the best beer I had in a very long time.

Having only been riding for one month prior to my move from Montana to Arizona, my plan for the ride south was very conservative. I had a general route planned, but it was not set in stone. As I rode south through Utah, I missed my turn and ended up heading down a road (Moki Dugway) I never even knew about. After riding through some beautiful scenery I came upon the Moki Dugway. Now I have been on some spectacular routes in my old Land Cruiser, but finding a dirt road like this on a highly traveled paved road was one of the highlights of my trip. This is one of the reasons I tend to ride without a plan, you never know what you will stumble upon.
Oops....missed that one....

Riding a little to fast into the first riders dust, looked up to late, did a nice broadslide, saw the runoff, let off the brake, stood it up and barely missed the 5ft deep hole full of stumps and rocks. Came to a stop on the tires, yelled SH..! Laughed out loud, propped the bike up on a stick so I could go back to the road for a picture and CRASH behind me the bike goes down. SH..!

After finally getting some luggage mounted on my new Super Tenere I headed out to pick up a couple of bonuses for the Big Money Rally. While stopped at a friend's house for a bit the skies opened up with a shower of the white stuff. Thirty minutes later the sun was shining again and I was off searching for another bonus.

This picture was taken in Lake Superior, Northern Michigan. The trip began in Chicago and routed through Wisconsin, Northern Michigan, Lower Michigan, and back to Chicago. The trip was a great mix of logging roads and twisties. DUCATI MTS 1200 ALT RIDER: crash bars, radiator guard, oil cooler guard, and skid plate.
