AltRider Luggage Rack System for BMW R 1200 GS /A (2003-2012)

The AltRider Luggage System for the BMW R 1200 GS just might be the most versatile on the market - featuring five different mounting configurations, several attachment options for RotopaX fuel packs, interfaces for the Givi Monokey top case system (requires Givi top case mounting kit - sold separately), and four separate mount points for RAM ball mounts. This allows for easy mounting of an action camera in the perfect location without the need for additional complicated clamps. You can decide to ride with a lot of luggage or with a pillion, and the luggage rack will accommodate your needs at a moment’s notice.

Although available separately, the two racks in the system work best together. The well thought out design features two racks which are CNC machined from 3/16 inch (4.75 mm) thick anodized aluminum, and are flanged to increase strength and create tie down points. Varied cutouts make it easy to strap, tie down, or hook bags or other items securely.  The finishes are superb on this rack with all chamfered cutouts which results in smooth edges all around.  The rear rack comes with a bracket – also made from 3/16 inch (4.75 mm) thick aluminum – which is used to mount in the low position and reinforce several mount/hook locations. When mounted in the lower position, the rear luggage rack has the added bonus of providing protection for the rear blinkers if the bike goes down. Installation of the pillion rack takes no time at all since it attaches and releases the same way the pillion seat does – with the key – so extra tools are unnecessary.

There is no rack system on the market that provides all these configurations within the same product. Other manufacturers have simply made multiple parts, so the rider has to decide at the time of purchase how, what type, and how much luggage will be carried.  With the AltRider solution, the rider can now configure the luggage system to the current need.

GIVI Monokey top cases can be fitted with the GIVI Mounting Kit -- no need for the additional cost of an adapter plate. NOT COMPATIBLE WITH GIVI Trekker 52L Top Case.

    Beautiful Kit

First things first: I have an Adventure. I was glad to ditch the luggage rack that looks like it came off a bike used in the movie Easy Rider (it's chrome! blech) and put something a bit more... butch on. Hence this rack, and in black, no less. It's almost a work of art. Seriously, looks awesome, functional, the anodized finish gives it that sort of semi-gloss, almost dark blue or purple tint. Very cool. I only say almost for one reason. On the pillion rack, the tabs that grab onto the plastic are thru-welded to the rack plate. This makes it stronger and easier to assemble precisely, but the welds on the top surface aren't ground down, and I think the black anodizing and brushed finish draws attention to them. I guess it's an added process, but it's really a shame they weren't ground down a little before finishing. No matter, there will be gear sitting there most of the time anyway, and it's a pretty minor thing, but it does mar what would otherwise be a flawlessly beautiful piece of metal. Like the previous review said, it mounts SUPER tight. I think that's a good thing. It means that the rack keeps all those little rubber feet in compression, so there's no wiggle or wobble in the rack whatsoever. All it takes to install is a little persistance to get the tabs started, and then a firm push on the post that goes into the seat mount hole, and it'll slide into place nicely. Pretty cool. I ran into some issues with the rear luggage rack. As previously stated, I have an Adventure. Obviously, the stock rack came off, but the spacers on the side of the rack, which are reused for this rack, are apparently longer on the Adventure than they are on the standard GS. The pictures on the instructions make the spacers look like they barely extend past the plastic rack, but mine are significantly longer, like almost double. It's enough that the low position tabs do not fit. So I'll have to make a washer stack for the time being until the next time I'm near the dealership and I can pester them for some new spacers. No biggie, and certainly not the fauly of AltRider in any way, just a little detail that fellow Adventure riders should expect. Also, the four lock nuts with washers that are called out in the instructions to mount the low position adapter (also shown in the parts layout at the beginning of the instructions) were not present in my kit. Again, no biggie, because the removal of the stock luggage rack left me with four very nice washer/nut combinations (seriously, a nut with a free-wheeling washer permanently attached, I've never seen such a thing before). One last thing, and I can't quite tell if this is a "bug" or a "feature", but leaning toward "feature": those three bolts at the back that the previous review mentions. On my part, the front-most two holes (that take the long bolts) seem to be machined just a LITTLE too wide. Now, a little elbow grease will get them snugged all the way down, and they will end up flush with the countersink, which is what makes me think this might be a feature. My retard engineer mind is thinking that by again keeping all the associated parts under a little bit of load, it keeps everything rigid and centered, since there really isn't anything else on the plate that would provide said stablity. Everything else is so nicely made and machined, with such attention to detail, and I've met Jeremy and heard him describe in detail why he went with this bolt, or that amount of clearance, that I can only assume that this has got to be deliberate. Wow, that got really long really fast. None of the issues I have are anything that would cause me not to want to buy the kit again. I most certainly would, and I do highly recommend it. Another great product from AltRider. I look forward to adding more of them to my bike in the future.

5 stars because i love alt rider products...but instructions need revising...

the following only applies to a 2012 R1200GS. BMW may have made changes that alt rider is unaware of, which lead to my particular installation issues? this set up has several possible configurations. what is below only applies to the racks set up as pictured on page 5 of the instructions with the "rear rack lower". i.e. a completely flat area behind the seat. also i was following the instructions that came with the racks. the instructions that i just viewed via download on the alt rider site are different! you should compare. first off. excellent quality! INSTALLATION NOTES: RE: PILLION replacement rack. - there was no indication in the instructions that i needed to install the pin that catches in the rear seat/pillion lock on the bike. some extra thinking and looking made me realize what was up...but still... - once the pin was installed...at first i thought that it wasn't going to fit. the fit is TIGHT, VERY TIGHT. it took a lot of muscle to wiggle the welded clips at the rear into position so that the pin that locks into the keyed seat release would even get near the hole. then it took a lot of messing and firm pressure to get it to seat in the catch. beware, the mechanism on the bike that releases the main seat and the pillion seat is the same....so any tightness on the pillion catch affects the main seat too....it appears that this will loosen up a bit over time, the second time i took it off and put it back on it was easier but some plastic has been scrapped away where the rear welded clips go in, i'm a bit on the fence about how secure those point are...it seems that they are just clipped into plastic. RE: REAR rack. [installed flat] this is where things got interesting...and the 2 sets of instructions i mentioned above deviate. the download version shows using a single bolt and spacer for the center of the rear rack. the instructions that came with the rack show using 3 bolts, which is what i did. - page 4, picture 8 indicated leaving the most rearward spacer in place. this didn't work for me—read below. - page 5, picture 11 shows putting the long spacers in place, removing the OEM bolts, what's not stated is that the OEM bolts have washers beneath them....should they stay or go? in my install the only way i could get the 2 plates to be flush on the top and get the 3 spacers to be level under the plate was to do the following: 1. remove the OEM rear spacer. 2. remove the OEM bolts AND washers shown on page 4, picture 8 3. use 1 of those washers under the replacement alt rider center spacer, do not use the OEM spacer at all. 4. the instructions say to use 3x m6x40 bolts. the center is not a 40, it's a 30 5. there is no mention of using loctite. the OEM bolts at the rear all had loctite used....i used loctite on all 3 rear top bolts. as i mentioned the download instructions only show using the single center bolt as the top surface attachment point...this makes sense, as that's how the OEM rack was installed, and you wouldn't have the issues i had....but in my mind 3 areas of support are better than one.
