AltRider Crash Bars for the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin
Honda put the new Africa Twin in the CRF category for a reason. Like the popular dirt bikes that share its nomenclature, this bike was made to not only handle the tough stuff, but to excel in it. Protect your CRF1000L Africa Twin with a set of AltRider Crash Bars, and venture confidently into the unknown.
Why a 3-Part System? We designed this system to be modular so that different types of riders could choose their level of protection. Some riders may be headed for a major off-road adventure, where the Full Crash Bar System will provide the most comprehensive solution. Others may not want the entire “roll-cage” type system, opting instead for just the Lower or Upper Bars. Some people may also choose to start with the Lower Crash Bars and add the other pieces over time. Whatever category you fall into, AltRider has a Crash Bar solution for you.
Lower Crash Bars The 3-part system starts with the Lower Crash Bars. Knowing the engine cases are the most exposed in all tip-overs, we designed these for maximum strength so that these alone will provide substantial protection to the bike’s engine and vulnerable castings. The Lower Bars are constructed of 1.25 inch (31.75 mm) diameter steel, which is twice as strong as 1 inch (25.4 mm) diameter steel while only adding 10% of the weight. This allows for a compact design that will function under impact while not interfering with the rider.
Upper Crash Bars The 1 inch (25.4 mm) Upper Crash Bars add another dimension of protection, providing coverage to the bike’s radiator and plastics. Upper Bars are more important on the tall and skinny Africa Twin than on many other bikes, as a simple tip over could result in substantial damage to these pieces.
Reinforcement Bar The 1 inch (25.4 mm) Reinforcement Bar ties the Lower and Upper Bars together, increasing the strength of the overall system. This design allows for even large impacts to be distributed throughout the entire system, minimizing damage to the bike’s engine, frame and other vital components.
All pieces in the system are made of high quality stainless steel in the USA. Select a configuration at the right for additional information on individual components.
Configuration notes: save when you buy the Upper & Lower Bars Combo, and save even more when you buy the Full System (compared to purchasing each piece separately). If you are ordering only the Upper or Lower and it’s your first piece, you’ll need to order with the installation bracket. If you already have the Upper or Lower and are ordering the other piece, you can order without the bracket.
Made from hand-TIG welded stainless steel tubing
3 piece system allows for customization and offers maximum protection
Available in black, red, or silver
DCT filter removable with crash bars in place
Compatible with both DCT and manual transmission models
Compatible with the OEM center stand and factory belly pan
Lower Crash Bars not compatible with optional DCT foot shifter
Not compatible with Honda Upper Bars
Lower bars may not be compatible with some aftermarket headers due to their relocation of the oxygen sensor

2017 Africa Twin Lower Crush Bars (silver)
After watching Woodzman Adventure installation video on YouTube, the installation was easy. The every part fits perfectly. My only struggle was to decide which company I should choose, and I am glad I chose AltRider. Made with stainless steel so I don't have to worry about rust. The welding job looks great. The silver crush bars match with my tri-color AT, and overall I am very happy with the product. Thanx!

Africa Twin Bars
I gave the bars a 3 only because at this price they should fit and they should look good....while its a 6 hour project for one man there are things your gonna need more hands for....the selection of fasteners provided is just not thought out well and for those really hard to access places they are absurd. The lower mounting block for the stiffener from the lower to the upper bars is way to close to the case on the left side and a moderate hit may push the block through the case cover...just sayin....its all little things that make the install a 3 star....for those prospective buyers just remember taking things off and putting things on should be part of your routine...stuff happens. My gripe is with hardware it sucks...think about replacing the supplied hardware with fasteners that work. If anyone needs decals for their bars I got em..but they are from another company...I guess the sales dept. at Altrider just doesn't care enough to pack a decal...go figure....Dick Bartel VA Beach VA

Great Product!
Installed upper and lower and tie bar. Good instructions, but a little hard to see pics in black and white. REALLY need to pay attention to the part about sticking a bolt through the opposite side to retain the engine spacer, I didn't and it was a pain digging it out of the skid plate and putting back in place. Also, if you have a factory skid plate, it must be dropped for the install. Bars look great and are high quality.

Quality Product, Outstanding Customer Service
Crash bars fit and look amazing. Install was not difficult but I did have trouble. Contacted customer service as I could not get the left lower crash bar to line up. I was given great advice ( loosen ALL the bolts/brackets, duh! ) and went smooth after that. I managed to strip a bolt, my fault, not the product. Altrider rounded up the single bracket and bolts I screwed up and dropped them in the mail, only charging shipping! I was impressed to say the least. My bike will have complete Altrider protection after this, very happy with the products and service. Ordered directly from Altrider site.

Best protection on the market
Ive had the full protection set up from AltRider since they were available. As a matter of fact I have just about every protection part made for the Africa Twin from AltRider. I had another popular Seattle based brand first and they were very flimsy. I ride my bike hard and treat it like a 450 dual sport. Im not saying I am a great rider by any means, because I've had my bike down literally 100 times I bet, but I've only had to straighten the upper bars once when they moved slightly, and there isn't a bar out there that wouldn't have moved on that drop. AltRider stands by there parts and has excellent customer service. As for the vibration stated in other comments. I haven't expierenced and vibration at all. I also feel like they are easier to install than other bars and have stronger attachment points. Nice Bars, Difficult Install
I purchased from Amazon due to the fast 2-day shipping (same price everywhere) and received a package with not only my upper and lower crash bars but also a KTM 1290 Skid Plate and mounting bracket. Not sure what that was about, too bad it wasn't Africa Twin ;-).
The issues I had with install were that the lower bar on the left/shifter side of the bike had mis-aligned screw holes. You could mount it to the lower 2 bolts or the upper two, but in either scenario the other end of the bar didn't match up with the mounting holes no matter how hard I pried. I ended up choosing to enlarge the lower bracket holes by bolting the upper in place, and marking the area to grind away with a pencil. After destroying every Dremel bit I owned, I ended up driving to the hardware store to buy a set of hand files to enlarge the holes. Had to remove about 1/8 of an inch diagonally from where the bolt holes were machined on the mounting plate. This took some time, the stainless steel is tough and thick.
The install was a letdown because it took most of a day, lots of unplanned elbow grease, and tools I didn't already own. The only other gripes I have are that the upper bars are not symmetrical. The right side sites closer to the fairing than the left, you can see it and feel it by passing a finger between them, almost like the bends weren't quite perfect (this may have been the issue with the lower holes not aligning as well); and 2nd gripe is that the lower bar on the left is very close to the foot shifter. If your foot creeps forward on the peg, and you go to downshift, you may be surprised to find that you're stomping on the crash bar instead of the shift peg, which isn't a deal breaker but noticeable when it happens.
Overall I'm fairly happy with the outcome, just didn't expect such a PITA install. Hopefully my case is isolated and the rest of you bolt on no problems. Haven't crash tested yet but you can manhandle the bike by grabbing onto the bars, very confidence inspiring. Final thought, the mounting hardware was very top notch, but my kit did not include thread locker so beware!

Reinforcement Bar Adds Very Bad Vibrations - Africa Twin
The Upper and Lower crash bars are the best available for the Africa Twin (in my opinion). However, there is a very serious engineering flaw with the reinforcement bars. Once connected, they cause a horrible vibration between 3800 and 4200 RPM. It is so bad, it will probably cause damage to the engine and frame welds over an extended period of time. The problem is that they turn the entire crash bar system into a huge tuning fork that adds harmonic vibrations at the RPM previously mentioned. I'm going to try adding strips of weight to the reinforcement bars to act as a damper. I hope this works; Otherwise, avoid the reinforcing bars.

Passed the field test
Luckily I only had my Africa Twin for a few weeks before the upper and lower bars arrived. The second trip out with the crash bars installed and the bike went over in a pretty rocky spot. The uppers bars took the entire fall and the only damage was one turn signasl got knocked loose. I was able to easily remove just one side of the crash bar so that I could remove the cowling and put the turn signal back into place. After looking at all of the delicate plastic that could have been damaged, I realized that these bars have already paid for themselves. These bars are very high quality, I'm glad that I was able to wait for them
