BMW’s water-cooled R 1200 GS is a powerful and versatile bike capable of eating up highway miles and tackling trails in the same trip. But if you’re counting on OEM crash bars to protect your engine, then you should know that these can do more harm than good. It has been documented that the OEM bars’ hard rubber pad can punch a hole in the cylinder header, which is why AltRider has produced a Reinforcement Bar to brace against impact and strengthen the entire crash bars structure. The Altrider design directs force in an almost straight line to the frame of the motorcycle, with no unnecessary bends or flimsy band clamps to bend under load.

Electro-polish is an organic process that is close to the factory bar finish but we cannot guarantee an exact match

Starting with 1 inch (25.4 mm) diameter stainless steel tubing, the Reinforcement Bar is laser cut, CNC bent and hand TIG welded in the United States. The Reinforcement Bars mount at the engine with an included engine through bolt. Unlike other designs that use plastic inserts, this heat-treated and CNC-machined through bolt provides critical strength and stability, and AltRider is the only one on the market to utilize this design. The Reinforcement Bars mount to the OEM bars with full-wrap two-part high-strength alloy industrial clamps attached to 3/16 inch (4.7 mm) thick mounting flanges. Installation and removal is a 15 minute job with the included stainless steel hardware.

AltRider’s Reinforcement Bars are available in a silver electro-polish finish to match the OEM crash bars, or black powder coat to match the engine and frame of some GS’s. They are compatible with OEM accessory crash bars as well as stock BMW crash bars on the Adventure model.

bars work, but could be better

Bars look nice, match the oem engine bars pretty well, metal is thick. The problem is mounting flanges. They are not flat. On the frame side it's not a big deal, the big bolt that goes through the frame is torqued enough to flatten the flanges against the frame. Engine bar side flanges are threaded, but because flanges are not flat m6 bolts are not parallel and it becomes very easy to destroy the threads when mounting, clamps have parallel holes. I ended up drilling the thread holes out to a bigger diameter and using longer bolts with nylock nuts. Works just well, but no risk of munging the threads. Too bad I can't attach a photo here.

OEM Reinforcement bars

Bike: BMW R1200GSA Product: Altrider® OEM Reinforcement Bars First Impressions: As I open the box from Altrider® I see the quality I’ve come to expect from them. I open the packages and start laying out all the parts getting prepared for the installation of my Altrider® OEM Reinforcement Bars. After opening the instructions, looking them over, and comparing the parts list to the ones I laid out. Everything is there and the finish on the parts perfectly matches those of the factory metal. I have several other Altrider® products on the bike and I’m always impressed with how well the instructions are written. Installation: The installation was straight forward and took about 30 minutes. I completed the installation by myself but a second set of hands could be helpful torquing the main bolt that passes through the engine mount. Following the instructions in order is key for an easy install. Function/ Form: The finished product looks great and should have been included from BMW. Anyone that has ever kicked or applied real pressure to the factory crash bars know the weak link is their tendency to compress or bend into the valve covers and potentially cause oil lose. I only ride about 20% offroad and have put a total of 8,000 miles on the bike since their installation. A couple of hard spills and landings have showed no movement and integrity is intact. They keep looking great and protection my engines vital parts. I have the Altrider® full length skidplate as well as their radiator guards. Each is function and great looking. Built and designed to the highest standards.
