Oh, how plans change...

Apr 09, 2010 // Lady Riders //

Local rider and AltRider friend Rene Sims recently took a two week long trip from Washington State down to Florida for Daytona Bike Week. She came by our office a few days ago to share her story with all of us.

The trip was planned with a few things in mind: get down to California, go visit Mom in Yuma for a few days, and then make it to Daytona in time for Bike Week. Oh, and stop at a few breweries along the way. Rene managed to do all those things, but her adventure turned into something completely unexpected.

Every day, she enjoyed the ride, took a few pictures, and stopped somewhere to sample an IPA and eat. Riding past Mt. Shasta, answering questions about her KTM, and meeting new people were all things Rene had anticipated. She even took a few day trips into Mexico with family.

It was in New Orleans the plan began to change. Pelting rain flooded the roads, and getting to her hotel, Rene had to cross a high, arching bridge across the river. The day that had started out so sunny ended with a drenched and tired Rene. She spent the next day in her hotel room, watching the rain create lakes and streams in the parking lot, but on the third day mustered the resolve to head out to Daytona.

Goodbye, New Orleans

Goodbye, Bourbon Street

Although the weather had delayed her arrival, Rene spent several days watching the races and meeting other motorcycle enthusiasts. No one could believe that she’d ridden her big KTM cross country alone. Rene just laughed, “It’s not like it’s hard.”

Rene got a lot of admiring looks on her KTM 990 Adventure

After a full day watching the races, Rene headed to a tiki bar across from her hotel, where she met some mechanics from the local motorcycle repair school.

“I went and talked to everyone there, and asked them to take a look at my chain and sprocket,” she said. “They told me I should head to the school the next day to take a tour. My bike was already loaded, and I planned to leave at eight the next morning, but I figured I could go see the school and just leave at 10.”

It was a good thing she did. When she showed up the next morning at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, she got the tour… and an offer.

“The director said there were no openings for the next session, but that if I was interested he’d make space,” Rene said. She signed the paperwork and made it official.

“It’s funny,” Rene said. “Before I left, I could envision my ride, I could envision my route… but I couldn’t envision how I’d get home. Even that day when I got up, I had no idea.”

The packed KTM ended up heading to a storage unit, and Rene bought a plane ticket home to wrap up her life in Washington.

Now, she’s heading back for the 17 month course. We’ll miss her, but we wish Rene the best of luck!

My name is Jerry DeBruler and I’m Rene’s brother. She is about to finish her schooling at the Motorcycle Mechanic’s institute and will be graduating this Friday (11-18-2011) with full certifications as a techniction with BMW, Buell, Harley-Davidson, Screaming Eagle, and I believe all four Japanese manufactures. She will leave Florida on Nov 20th aboard her KTM 990 adventure with mom driving her Chevy S-10 pickup ultimately bound for her home in Bonney Lake, WA. They will travel together convoy style through Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Oregon, and finally Washington State. Their trip will take almost a month with stops in New Orleans for Thanksgiving, lots of sightseeing and visits with friends along the way. Rene has been living in Florida and going to school for 19 months. She is very excited to get home and begin her new career working in the motorcycle industry. I’m especially excited to see her come home and become involved the motorcycle industry. What fun we are going to have!! Her friends and family are very proud of her accomplishment and we all look forward to spending time and riding with her again. Jerry
