FAQ - Taste of Dakar 2020

Feb 19, 2020 // Trips on Two Wheels //

AltRider Taste of Dakar FAQ

Post comments below with any additional questions you may have about the event! Be sure to check back for additional updates!

What’s the deal with the schedule?

Great news guys- we’ve made the event longer! This means you can show up Thursday and ride all weekend long! Does that include Friday? Yes. And can you ride Saturday? Also Yes! What about Sunday morning? YES. What about if you can’t make it til Friday afternoon? .. Nope. Just kidding. OF COURSE. The open-schedule format means you get to choose your own adventure for Taste of Dakar. Want to get a group together and tackle the hard route? Great! Want to take it easy Saturday afternoon and check out Titus Canyon.. Perfect! YOU GET TO CHOOSE.

Do I need to be a seasoned veteran in order to sign‐up?

No! We design these rides so that people of all skill levels and various bikes will be able to not only ride, but have a great time! The ride will be broken up into different skill levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), and for each skill level there will be sign‐ups for groups of 4 to 6 riders depending on how fast or slow you want to go. If you are coming by yourself we will help you find a group to head out with.

Do I need to have a GPS?

Each group will be assigned a leader and sweep. The leader and sweep must both have a GPS unit. This ensures no one gets lost. It is not required to bring a GPS, but if you would like to be a leader or sweep it is required, and it’s always a good idea to have one anyway.

Do I need to have a licensed bike?

Yes, portions of the routes will be on roads/highways

Will I need off‐road tires (knobbies)?

At minimum a 50/50 tire is recommended. Although not mandatory, if you arrive on a bike with street tires there’s a 99.7% chance you are going to have a bad time.

Do I need a bluetooth communication device for the rides?

While a communication device is not required, it is helpful to communicate with the riders in your groups. We’d recommend a Sena Bluetooth communication device to link with your fellow riders.

Can I arrive and camp early? Bring my RV?

AltRider covers tent camping accommodations for Thursday through Saturday night. If you plan to arrive earlier or stay longer, you must make separate reservations for those nights with Walt at Gold Point. There are RV spaces available- please be advised that there will be an additional fee, and that it will be payable directly to Walt in Gold Point. RV camping will be adjacent to the moto camping, just outside the event perimeter. Rate for RV hookup is $17/night. Please reserve early, there are only 10 spots available.

Can I bring my significant other?

Yes! However the cost of the ticket goes into the meals, camping, accommodations, planning, and logistics. Even if an attendee is not riding, they are required to register at the full cost of the ticket.

When are you feeding me?

For those heading in on Thursday night,we’ll have burgers and dogs on the grill, paired with a cold beer and great company, but if you’re looking for something more substantial on this first night, we suggest stopping for a meal on the way to Gold Point. Friday and Saturday Breakfast starts at 7:30AM, and Dinner will be served at 6:00 PM. We will have adventure snacks available at the riders meeting every morning, please help yourself.  We will have lunch stop suggestions for every route we provide, but lunch will be the responsibility of the riders. Sunday morning breakfast will start at 7:30 AM, and after that...You’re on your own!

Will there be a gas stop during the ride? How far away is the nearest gas station?

The distance to the next gas station depends on the routes, which are usually finalized a few weeks before the event. The routes will be sent out with details of gas stops. Generally our rides cover anywhere from 150 to 200 miles. We try to have two gas stops on each route with a range of 50 to 75 miles between each. If your bike has close to a 50 to 75 mile capacity, it is highly recommended you bring additional gas. Walt will have fuel available in Gold Point, please bring cash if you wish to purchase it there.

How much are we “roughing it”?

There will be bathrooms and showers, as well as a water station for refilling your water supplies. We will have a charging station for phones, though a battery bank wouldn’t be a bad idea! There is a bar onsite, breakfast and dinner will be provided, along with snacks each day.

What is your Cancellation Policy?

Full refunds will be offered up to 4 weeks before the event. 50% refund will be offered up to 2 weeks before the event. After that window, we will not be allowing any refunds.

What do I need for the Training Clinics?

The Clinics start Friday and Saturday mornings around 9am. Please arrive at the meeting spot fully geared up, with adequate water for the day. After a brief Rider’s Meeting, you will ride offsite to a dry lakebed nearby for the duration of the class. Lunch will be back at Gold Point (on us!) and the afternoon will consist of a guided trail ride to put some of your new skills to use.

Can I sign up for both Clinics?

We suggest sticking to one or the other- The Taste of Dakar is all about that adventuring spirit- we want you to go out and explore what the Nevada desert has to offer. Additionally- Our clinics are designed to build off existing skills. What you learn in Level 1 will help you in Level 2- but only after some ‘trail testing’ out on your own.
